The State Newspaper has unionized!
For more than a century, The State has been a pillar of South Carolina, its communities and people. We, The State News Guild, aim to keep it that way for generations to come.
As the tides of journalism continually shift, threatening the well-being, credibility and very existence of local newsrooms like our own, this guild aims to create a steady mooring to provide for the security and flourishing of journalists now and to follow.
Our mission is to foster an environment in which The State’s journalists can continue producing works of truth, accountability, culture and compassion without constant worry of professional insecurity.
We seek reasonable protections for our jobs, fairness and equity in our pay, diversity in our staff, and the tools needed to continue to provide the highest-quality journalism to the people of South Carolina.
We will fight for a fair deal while striving for a positive relationship with management. Organizing can be adversarial, but it must always be based on respect and understanding.
We believe in The State and its mission, and we want it to succeed. We believe this will help ensure this newsroom can continue to meet the needs of our community. We ask that management respect our democratic right to organize and bargain with us in good faith for a contract that will ensure The State’s future place in the Palmetto State and its capital city.
